Ancient Land
Ancient Ganja, the homeland of the great Azerbaijani poet Nizami, is a vibrant city that has preserved its historical appearance and is known for its delicious cuisine.
From 1804 to 1918, the city was part of the Russian Empire and was known as Yelizavetpol, named in honor of Elizabeth, the wife of Emperor Alexander I.
In 2016, Ganja was the European Youth Capital. This is the only instance where a city outside the European Union has been awarded this title. In 2017, Ganja was also the "Cultural Capital" of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Things to Do in Ganja
The main attractions in the central part of the city are the ancient mosques and hammams (baths) built during the Safavid rule, the majestic buildings from the era of the Ganja Khanate and the Russian Empire, as well as magnificent examples of socialist classicism architecture.
At the same time, Ganja is a modern, beautiful city full of life and energy. The city is home to several universities, numerous stylish cafes, and art spaces in the center. The architectural building of the former 19th-century Lutheran church now houses a modern puppet theater. In 2016, Ganja was named the European Youth Capital.
Another attractive feature of the city is its culinary specialties. You must try Ganja's baklava, dovga—a traditional yogurt soup with rice and herbs, and the famous local wines.
